Into School - Baytree is commissioned by Lambeth Council: Children and Young People Service (CYPS) to deliver this project for Targeted Youth Service (14-19)from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2011

Into School aims to prepare recently arrived young women aged 14-19 for entry into, and success in, mainstream education in the UK.

It seeks to give them individual support in a safe and welcoming environment, in order to address their own specific needs and concerns, while directing them on a positive path towards becoming committed, active citizens, whether they remain in the UK, or take their skills back to their native countries.

It concentrates on giving:

  • English

  • Academic mentoring

  • Cultural integration support

ESOL (English as a Second Language)

Girls attend four ESOL classes of 1.5 hrs each, weekly. They may also attend further one on one English support sessions.

Mentoring

English Support
A key component of the mentoring is the academic aspect i.e one-on-one conversation in English, Maths and Science. This provides the mentee with the necessary support required before starting school.

Support in adapting to the British Education System
The education systems in other countries can be very different, not only in their syllabuses, but also in their learning style and examinations. For this reason, we offer support in the transition between education systems.

Support in understanding British cultural norms
A lack of understanding of how things work or why things are as they are in a new place can seriously inhibit learning, as it makes people feel uncomfortable and ‘culture shocked’. This aspect of the mentoring allows the girls to ask questions and investigate what differences concern them as individuals.

Character Development
An important part of Baytree’s ethos is the fostering of positive virtues and values within each girl who we work with. Whilst the aim of the programme in the short-to-middle term is to help the girls integrate into school and make the most of their mainstream education, we are aware of the need to support them in building the skills and developing an outlook that will help them become active citizens who will contribute to society in the UK.

Cultural Integration Support

We provide a wide variety of activities both within and outside the centre to foster a comprehensive understanding of British culture. The one-on-one mentoring sessions are a critical element in achieving cultural awareness and understanding.

Examples of these sessions are:

  • cookery, trips to the British Museum, central London, etc.

  • practical tips on "how to travel by tube", treasure hunt, movie forums, etc.

Places in the Into School Programme are limited. Parents/Guardians and the young women (14-19) are asked to attend an interview to ensure that they are aware of the commitments needed. The interview is also an opportunity for applicants to find out more about the programme.
